The PGC School Team had an enjoyable first workday celebrating the opening of school.

The team meets each Thursday at the school from 9:00 to 11:00AM.
Carolyn Fadden brought her granddaughter, Allison, age 8, who earned the MVP of the day. Although refreshments were served, this team was having way too much fun getting dirty. Margaret Levinson brought delectable cranberry scones while Diana Roda and Susan Homola offered fruit and cherry tomatoes.

During the first half hour, the team cleared the six foot diameter bed of weeds and saved a butterfly bush for the middle school habitat garden. Next the team rearranged the stones and laid a stone path for the custodians to use while raising "Old Glory". Carolyn, our president, demonstrated great finesse with the stonework. Margaret shared the history of the "potato stones which were originally and lovingly found and placed by Carl Quinby." After tilling the soil, Diana lent her artistic talent as we laid out a design and planted six magenta mumms for fall interest. Holes were dug for six boxwoods to offer year round color. Clusters of daffodil bulbs will be planted between the mumms and along the path. The area will be mulched with double cut dark wood.

Although the team had no planting plan at the time, it evolved as we discussed the need for deerproof, seasonal interest and is attached for your reference. As the team finished up we heard a chorus of "Thank you" from art teacher, Cynthia Forrest's class who came outside to draw the flowers.

So stay tuned. Thursday, Sept. 9th will be spent planting the boxwood and daffodils, a little watering and mulch and then onto the peony beds! All are welcome. Please join us. Happy Gardening!

student charrette participants

In response to a request for advice on landscaping the new school addition, Katie Moss Warner spearheaded a charrette in February, 2002 that included community members, landscape and gardening professionals, parents, teachers, and school administrators, as well as students. The group met in earnest for a day and came up with innovative suggestions that have been implemented successfully.
