We're called the Orange Ants, for the color of the hard hats, vests, and bags necessary to our job of picking up litter along scenic Route 9D in Philipstown. During the first outing in November 1995, 34 members and some spouses hit the road following a safety lecture by a state Department of Transportation engineer. Naomi Brantjes and her husband Rob made the picks by painting poles vivid orange and inserting a nail in the end of each.
Adopt-A-Highway
To ensure our safety, there were spotters in mobile-phone equipped vehicles and the local ambulance corps, including on of our members, was on alert.(reprinted from GCA Bulletin Vol. 85, Number 5, March/April 1997.)

This very successful Adopt-A-Highway project was originally organized by Betty Green, and has taken on a life of its own with widespread community involvement by other agencies as well as PGC.
